2010 Yaquina Lighthouse Century Bike Ride
The Yaquina Wheels Bicycle Club will be hosting its 6th annual Yaquina Lighthouse Century Rides. This year, the rides will be held on Saturday, August 21st, 2010. The rides are non-competitive and open to all bicycle riders. All rides start at the Yaquina Lighthouse Visitor Center located in Newport, Oregon. The courses will open at 7:00 am and close at 4:00 pm.
Three fantastic rest stops along the routes will be stocked with delicious fresh fruits, baked goods, and other cooked food items. Friendly mechanical support will be available on all routes.
The Yaquina Lighthouse Rides is the only organized century ride with scenic routes covering the beautiful central coast of Oregon. Many of the roads on the routes are favorites of local bicycle riders. On the day of the ride, bike ride participants receive free admission to the visitor center and the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area, 3 miles north of central Newport, Oregon.
Choose from 3 distances 25, 70, and 100 miles. See two famous Newport lighthouses, the historic Bayfront, and watch for herons, egrets, ospreys, and bald eagles along the rivers. For 2010, the 70 mile & 100 mile routes are the same as last year. Both long routes follow the Yaquina Bay and River before passing through the town of Siletz along a quiet country road, then follow the Siletz River on to coastal vistas. The 100 milers take a route that takes them through country farmland, also along the quiet waters of the Siletz River, including Moonshine Park before returning to the coast. Riders on the longer rides will experience breathtaking views from Cape Foulweather.
The cost is $30 for the long rides and $15 for the short ride. Pre-registration is on-line or by mail until August 19th, on Friday, 20 August, from 4:00-6:00 PM at Bike Newport, 150 NW 6th St, Newport, or on the day of the ride at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area Visitor Center. Registration details can be found at www.yaquinawheels.org/Century.html
Proceeds from the rides benefit the Newport’s Friends of the Lighthouses, Waldport’s Green Bikes Program and other local, regional, and national non-profit cycling organizations.
