A Hiking Overview

Hiking

Hiking trails are plentiful the length and breadth of Lincoln County – Oregon’s Central Coast, from Cascade Head to Cape Perpetua and throughout the Siuslaw National Forest. Some of the best hikes worthy of note: Three Rocks Road at the Cascade Head Natural Area near Lincoln City, Drift Creek Wilderness in the Siuslaw National Forest near Waldport and Gwynn CreekTrail also in the Siuslaw National Forest near Yachats.  For information on hiking in each area of the Central Oregon coast check out each city listing in this area of the website.

Hikes around the Lincoln County area do not require special skills, however some cautions are advisable.

1.  Hike with someone.  Company makes the miles go faster and provides help in an emergency.

2. Tell someone when & where you are hiking and when you will return.  Saves time for a rescue party.

3. Wear comfortable shoes that support the ankles.

4. Take water food and a first aid kit.  Drinking from streams is risky.

5. Don’t eat unfamiliar berries or mushrooms.

6. Don’t litter or pick wild flowers.

7. Avoid short-cuts which cause erosion and more contacts with ticks/snakes.

8. Pace yourself – remember you are at a higher elevation.

9. Binoculars and camera are important – some scenes come only once in a lifetime!

10. Check for ticks when you return.

HIKERS HAPPY SONG

I love to go a-wandering
Along the mountain track;
And as I go I love to sing,
My knapsack on my back

I love to wander by the stream
That dances in the sun;
So joyously it calls to me:

“Come join my happy song”!

Valderi, Valdera, Valderi
Valdera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Valderi, Valdera

My knapsack on my back!
I wave my hat to all I meet
And they wave back to me;
And blackbirds call so loud and sweet
From every greenwood tree.

High overhead the skylarks wing;
They never rest at home.
But just like me they love to sing

As o’er the world we roam!
Valderi, Valdera, Valderi
Valdera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Valderi, Valdera

My knapsack on my back!
Oh, may I go a-wandering
Until the day I die.
And may I always laugh and sing
Beneath God’s clear blue sky!

Valderi, Valdera, Valderi
Valdera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
Valderi, Valdera
My knapsack on my back!
